Scouting LSU's First Opponent: North Carolina

Late Saturday - Early Sunday Post - August 7 - 8

LSU faces North Carolina Sept. 4 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic.  LSU fans want to know what to expect from their opponents.  The Tiger football team is about to start studying the game films of their opponents and I think that may be a good idea for LSU's fans.  I have found two highlight films from tarheelblue.com that Tiger fans need to see.  North Carolina beat a very good 14th ranked Virginia Tech team and a solid Miami team last year.  Let's watch a couple of highlight videos and I will comment below the videos and look forward to reading you comments.

Note: The following videos are available to anyone at YouTube.com.  Thanks to tarheelblue.com for not restricting these videos.

First, North Carolina vs. Virginia Tech

Second, North Carolina vs. Miami

The North Carolina Defense is impressive. It looks like the defensive backs are really looking for the interception and it looks like once they intercept a ball, a touchdown may be expected. I also noticed some good pressure on the quarterback and a solid run defense particularly up the middle. On offense I noticed that there seems to be a blocking scheme that really opened a huge hole in the middle in both the Virginia Tech highlights as well as the Miami highlights. It also appeared that North Carolina had success throwing the ball in the flats and letting the running back or wide receiver make yards after the catch. One other thing that stood out in both highlight films is that North Carolina appears to have a solid kicking game.

In case you were wondering, after watching the UNC/VT game again, I double checked and North Carolina's #8 Greg Little is on this year's roster. Little is a 6'3", 220lbs. senior wide receiver. Defensive back Kendric Burney #16 is also a senior this year.  He is listed as a 5'9", 190lbs. cornerback. He looks several inches taller than that in the videos.  He sure plays big.

OMG we are going to get killed. I kept seeing Jefferson every time a QB was sacked and Jarrett Lee every time there was a pick six.

LSU has to many good football players, that North Carolina cant do anything about...NC,is not Bama,Florida, despite the hip you hear, to the contrary...Look no further then the last few years of recruiting, and you will see what college team have been getting the the 5 star players.
There a real difference between a very loaded college football team, then a few great players on a colleg football team..NC has a few,LSU has a lot.
Tigers win.

The worrying thing about the LSU football team is they are starting to look like a Army of good football players, who have become incidental, to the struggling Les Miles trying to coach.
What a picture, the head coach becoming extra baggage.
And when the other football team has as many good players, it really shows.
I guess I will never be happy with Les Miles coaching LSU,he cant coach...LSU win any way, because of the LSU players.

Come on, Les Miles is not that bad!

You said it all,Les Miles, no sense in saying his name again.

"Les" we get the shakes, when the season starts.

All through the mid 60's to the mid 70's two teams in the SEC had the talent. LSU and Bama. It never failed, LSU could beat Archie Manning one time in three, and lose to a closely matched Nebraska coached by Bob Devaney. We could generally beat Shug Jordan of Auburn. You name it, LSU usually had the upper hand. We had players, lots of them.

Then we'd play Bama. They had players too. We had Bert Jones, didnt matter they had 8 super running backs and a qb that could run. We had a great corner back, they had a great SE.

The teams were even, year after year, and we always lost. They had Bear Bryant, he was innovating the wishbone, breaking it, inventing new sets, new defensive fronts, didnt matter that we had for the most part just as good players. To beat the Bear, you had to have dominatingly better talent. And we rarely got that edge. Twice actually with McClendon, and we still almost got beat.

So, with Miles, he's going against Butch Davis. Davis rebuilt Miami, made them the team that won the BCS that first year Coker was there. And it looks like he's making the most of UNC also.

Doesnt matter that UNC isnt Miami and he may not win a BCS championship there. What matters is if in game one of the season, does he have his team better prepared to play than Miles.

What are the odds... hmmm... We needed two blocked field goals and a lucky bad decision 45yd pass from Russell to beat AZ state. Last year we got lucky by having some serious YAC opportunities to beat Washington when their coach Sarkesian had in one game resurrected that failed program.

No, Les doesnt give one the feeling that 'this time we have the nukes'. More like Mr. Haney from Green Acres on the sidelines.

We'll win if we have dominatingly more talent. If it comes to game day coaching, .. well, we've all seen what thats all about. Who can forget how with Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis and Early Doucett, with Jamarcus Russell at qb, we ran up the middle all game against Auburn in '06... And only passed in the 4th quarter when the loss was imminent. Led to the famous withdrawn pass interference play.

We should have thrown for 600 yds on those guys and won by 20. But Miles was going to run all day.

If we get into a coaching IQ contest, gents, we're in a battle of wits, largely unarmed.
