Offense Shines in LSU's Second Scrimmage

The following is an official LSU Sports Information press release meaning most every article you will read about Thursday's scrimmage will be based on this information:

BATON ROUGE – The LSU offense had a big day on Thursday as quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee guided the Tigers on several scoring drives during the 100-plus play scrimmage here in Tiger Stadium.

The scrimmage was scripted and featured mainly redzone and tight zone situations for both the offense and defense. The Tigers closed the scrimmage with the two-minute drill as well as putting the offense in several other last-minute scenarios in which they needed points to win the game.

“We had a 100-play-plus scrimmage and the first, second and third teams all got snaps,” Miles said. “It was an offensive day. The quarterbacks played well. They hit passes and the receivers did a nice job of catching the ball. We really enjoyed the fact that the offense made improvement.

“The defense certainly was around the ball and played very hard. The first defense played better than the second unit. This was a very physical scrimmage, but it’s what we needed. We’ll go back and look at this film and see what we need to do to improve. We played hard and we are making progress but there are some things that we have to correct.”

Offensively, quarterbacks Jefferson and Lee combined to complete 22 of 40 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns. In all, a total of nine offensive touchdowns were scored. All but two of the touchdowns came on drives of less than 40 yards.

“We’re in the tight zone, red zone for the most of the day,” Miles said. “I think our longest drive had the opportunity to go 70 yards for one series. We kind of looked at specific coverages and some of the situations that surround red zone and tight zone.”

The longest scoring drive during the scrimmage came during the 2-minute portion of the workout when Jefferson directed the offense on a 4-play, 65-yard drive. The drive was capped when Terrence Toliver made a leaping catch over Patrick Peterson in the endzone for a 37-yard touchdown.

“I felt like Jordan made all the checks and hit some passes,” Miles said. “I thought Jarrett Lee threw well and again, did some things that he really needed to do. Terrence Toliver had a big reception for a touchdown”

Toliver paced the receivers with 93 yards on three catches, including receptions for 46 and 38 yards.

Murphy led all rushers with 61 yards on six carries, including touchdown runs of 23 and 20 yards. Murphy also added a four-yard TD run during a goalline portion of the scrimmage. Michael Ford added 52 yards on seven attempts, including a 28-yard burst, while Stevan Ridley chipped in with 32 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.

“(Stevan) Ridley ran the ball well and Richard Murphy had a big day,” Miles said. “These guys are getting eight to 10 carries per scrimmage and I like what they are doing when they are getting their opportunity.”

Defensively, the Tigers forced a pair of turnovers with safety Craig Loston and cornerback Ron Brooks each intercepting a pass. Loston added six tackles and a sack to have the most productive day on the defensive side of the ball for the Tigers.

“Craig Loston played very well,” Miles said. “He made a couple of tackles that appeared to me to be in the center of the field, and the contact appeared to be pretty significant.

“Ken Adams at the one end and ‘KeKe’ Mingo were probably in on a number of plays and had a couple of tackles behind the line. The defense played well.”

Thursday’s scrimmage marked the unofficial end of preseason camp for the Tigers as LSU has now gone through 16 practices during the first two weeks of August. LSU will take Friday off, hold a pair of practices on Saturday followed by a special teams workout on Sunday. School starts at LSU on Monday.

“We got a lot accomplished,” Miles said. “We’ll take tomorrow off from practice and then we’ll come back on Saturday and start turning our attention a little bit more towards our opponent as we go forward.”

I really do not like our offense getting the better of our defense, this early in our football season. Before we even play a game.
It bothers me, that our defense might be weaker then I want the defense to be..I want a strong defense,to put the stop on the other guys attempt's to score TD.
But I am not to surprise to read that JJ,and JL,are running the LSU offense better then last year..They were red shirt freshman last year, for heavens sakes.
So, if the LSU offense starts clicking, like we all wanted, lets just hope that the defense is not giving us a misguided view?

Actually, Jordan was a sophomore and Lee was a RS sophomore. Thats second and third yr players. One would think that any issues either might have would no longer be related to lack of years at LSU.

Yes, you are correct,JJ,and JL,does have more experience then some of the LSU fans think..But where do you go, to correct you bad mouthing Les Miles,JJ,and JL,for what you said was a bad job?
How do you become stupid at thinking, but skill in writing words?
I would fire you out right, buddy, after reading what you think you know.
You do not have a clue, about real life,Football coaches are not God,and college football players are real young men.
I do not know what in the world you are..Except,maybe a boring blow hard, who think he is smart,in his own mind only.
